It's done with the category description field within a category.php template file.
Check out http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/category_description for examples.

Hey, I would like to obtain something similar to what you have here: http://idealienstudios.com/projects/ice/
I don't know if this is a category page, but what I need for my blog is to have a different explanatory text for to each category archive of my blog. Here you have the short text at the beginning " Idealien Category Enhancements..." styled the same as the posts that follow it. Maybe this is not done with your plugin, but I'd appreciate a reply.
Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the praise Sarah. Need more info to be able to offer any help to resolve your issue:

What version of WP do you have it installed on? It works with 2.9.2 and below currently with no issues.

Have you tried it (temporarily) with all other plugins turned off?

What (if any) other plugins do you have installed that relate to categories or themes or templates?

Awesome plugin! Working great, except for one little (and slightly annoying) glitch. :(

The plugin works wonderfully when I select a template while creating a new category, but doesn't if I go into the "Edit" page of a pre-existing category. It allows me to select the template from the drop-down menu, but when I click save it doesn't save it. This has lead me to having to re-create any of the categories I already had (including sub-categories) in order to get the templates to apply.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks for this, I have been struggling with a solution to this sort of problem. As web designer foremost and only code solutions as a last resort, this sort of help is fantastic.

Although i am using Custom Field Search plugin, i will try and adapt it and integrate this code if possible.

In one short google search i find this site and the links you provide to be exactly what i am after. Much appreciated.

Just finished listening to 1 of the 4 part podcast on Commercializing Wordpress from WPTavern WPWeekly and come away very inspired. Amongst those plugins that immediately caught my ear were the Edit Flow project (aka CoPress) for workflow management towards newsrooms.

Chris - You are right that very little of the features / functionality a large business would be interested in has to do with public-facing areas of the website. They "could" run their website with a text-editor and FTP client. But most believe that the back-end content development / approval process they <del datetime="2010-04-19T11:50:51+00:00">require</del> want limits the tools they could consider to publish a site.

I agree that "Enterprise-level" is a mostly generic term to set the sales narrative for the scale a system could support. However, when the bulk of WordPress narratives written on the web could be paraphrased as "WordPress is a blog platform", I still think it is important to highlight just how versatile it is that it can be easily customized to support so many different use cases.

I spent over two years working for an agency with their own proprietary "enterprise-level" CMS. WordPress kicks the everliving crap out of that thing.

Also, "enterprise-level" seems more like a sales and marketing term than a useful descriptor. Plus, most of the things you've listed don't really affect the public-facing areas of the website, with the notable exception of custom data types.
